What is Biometrics

Biometrics is the science of analyzing physical or behavioral characteristics specific to each individual to be able to authenticate their identity. If we were to define biometry or biometrics in the most straightforward sense, we would say the “measurement of the human body.” There are two categories of biometrics:

  • Physiological measurements and
  • Behavioral measurements

Biometrics is the most pertinent means of identifying and authenticating individuals in a reliable and fast way through the use of unique biological characteristics.
Biometric systems are of two types: “verification” and “identification”.
The biometric can then be used solely in an authentication system – a person touches their finger on a sensor embedded in a smart mobile device, used by the authentication solution as part of a challenge/response system. Is it my finger? Yes, then my smartphone is unlocked, or No it isn’t my finger and the smartphone remain locked.

Biometrics Software Modelization & Tools

Fingerprint Recognition

Fingerprint recognition is one of the most well-known biometrics, and it is by far the most used biometric solution for authentication on computerized systems. Fingerprint identification is popular because of the inherent ease in acquisition, the numerous sources (10 fingers) available for collection, and their established use and collections by law enforcement and immigration.

The two main categories of fingerprint matching techniques are minutiae-based matching and pattern matching:
Minutiae matching relies on recognition of the minutiae points, this is the most widely used technique
Pattern matching simply compares two images to see how similar they are, often used in fingerprint systems to detect duplicates

Facial Recognition

Face recognition is a method of identifying or verifying the identity of an individual using their face. Face recognition systems can be used to identify people in photos, video, or in real-time.
Face recognition for hotels and other accommodation services can be used to enhance customer experience by registering their face at arrival. It can be then used for unlocking their rooms (using a mobile app or dedicated facial recognition door lock), food services, making payments, access control and more.
Facial recognition can work as a centralized access control system, replacing traditional cards or keys for the purpose in traveler lodging.

Voice Authentication

Technology of establishing identity by associating voice print of a person with his/her identity data and verification of claimed identity is called Voice Biometrics.
Voice pattern is an individual characteristic and no two persons are found to have exactly same spectrogram. A visual record of speech analyzed with respect to frequency, duration, and amplitude is called a spectrogram, also known as voice-print, sonogram, spectral waterfall and voice gram. Voice print, being unique to a person, can be used to identify his or her uniquely.
When it comes to remote identification of users, Voice biometrics can be called a specialist.

Iris Recognition

The iris is the colored ring around the eye. Iris scanning measures the unique patterns in irises, the colored circles in people’s eyes. Biometric iris recognition scanners work by informative the iris with invisible infrared light to pick up unique patterns that are not visible to the naked eye. Iris scanners detect and exclude eyelashes, eyelids, and specular reflections that typically block parts of the iris.
Iris recognition is commonly used as a physical access control modality, ideal for high throughput environments that demand speed and accuracy.

Authentication & Identification

Biometrics allows a person to be identified and authenticated based on a set of recognizable and verifiable data, which are unique and specific to them.
Biometric authentication is the process of comparing data for the person’s characteristics to that person’s biometric “template” to determine resemblance.
In this mode, the question is: “Are you indeed, Mr or Mrs X?”
Biometric identification consists of determining the identity of a person.
In this mode, the question is a simple one: “Who are you?

Windows Hello

Microsoft launched Windows Hello to introduce millions of their customers to the added security and convenience offered by a biometric sign-in. Windows Hello gives Windows 10 users an alternative way to log into their devices and applications using a fingerprint, iris scan or facial recognition. Here’s what the technology does, who uses it and the hardware required. Windows Hello sign-in platform, making them easy to install and use.
